Guidance Update – October 2010
Greetings from the Guidance Department and welcome to the first edition of “Guidance Update” for the 2010-2011 school year. This communiqué will serve as a valuable link between Hendricken’s Guidance Department and our families. Our goal is that these newsletters will answer many questions and alert you to upcoming events that may affect your son.

PSAT/NMSQT EXAM – October 16, 2010
This test will be administered at Bishop Hendrickenon Saturday, October 16th for all sophomores and juniors. This is a valuable practice test for all tenth and eleventh grade students in preparation for taking their SAT. It also serves as a qualifying test for the very prestigious National Merit Scholarship program for juniors who score in the top five percentile. Our tenth and eleventh grade students have been registered and the fee has been paid through your tuition. This is not an optional test. Students of all ability levels may benefit from taking this test. All students should arrive at Hendricken by 8:00 AM and the test will begin at 8:15AM. The exam will conclude by noon. Sophomores and juniors will be informed about the test by their guidance counselors during their English classes.
SAT Test Dates
Seniors should be aware of the SAT test dates and deadlines. These are posted in the guidance office and on the SAT website (www.collegeboard.com). Hendricken is NOT a test site in the fall. Itwill be a test site for the May 7, 2011 SAT that our juniors will be encouraged to take. Unlike the PSAT, students must register and pay for the SAT on their own. Registration forms are available in our guidance office or you may register on-line at www.collegeboard.com.
Progress Reports
Edline continues as an online tool for parents to stay current with their son’s academic progress. Again this year, we will mail out course specific “deficiency reports” when a student is in danger of failing a particular course. These deficiency reports will be mailed on October 7th.
Parent/Teacher Conferences
Mark your calendar for Parent/Teacher conferences on November 18th. More information regarding the format of this program will be forthcoming.
Extended Absences from School
In the case of an extended (three days or longer) absence from school, please use the following procedure for obtaining homework. First consult Edline where your son’s teachers have been encouraged to post assignments. If the assignments do not appear on Edline, please e-mail the teacher directly to request homework. Should you need assistance, you may contact your son’s counselor at any time.
