A Library Literacy Class is taught to all Freshman and is an important instructional experience intended to familiarize students with the policies and procedures of the library, as well as to teach them how to use print, non-print, and technologically based resources which are available to them at Bishop Hendricken High School.
The Library Literacy class is mandatory for all Freshmen and is a component of their Freshman English Class. Six classes are extracted from their Freshman Study Hall period. The classes educate the students in the following topics: 1) location of resources and materials in the library, 2) use of the online public access catalog (OPAC), 3) introduction to the research process and plagiarism, 4) use of reference materials located in the Reference Department, 5) use of the online database subscription services, and 6) use of the internet and website evaluation. All classes are taught and coursework graded by the Director of the Library/Media Center.
Upon completion of the classes, the student’s work is graded and the grades are forwarded to their English teacher for incorporation into their fourth quarter English grade.
