Braeden Shields ’22 earns Principal’s Leadership Award

WARWICK, RI (May 5, 2022) – Mark R. DeCiccio ’03, Principal, is proud to announce that Braeden Shields ’22 has been named recipient of the 2022 Principal’s Leadership Award.

Inspired by Bishop Hendricken’s core values, the Principal’s Leadership Award is presented to a graduating senior who is dedicated to servant leadership throughout his career at Hendricken. The recipient is an individual who lives out Christ’s message, and the mission of the Church, by doing for others. More specifically, this includes service to the poor, marginalized, voiceless, and those facing injustice.

“Braeden fully embodies our core value of servant leadership and faithful service to others in the name of Christ,” said Mark DeCiccio ’03, Principal. “He has been a shining example of our school’s mission and commitment to Christian service, inspiring his peers by his actions and leading by example. Braeden is an exemplary young, Catholic leader.”

A model student, Shields was described by a faculty member as “the complete embodiment of excellence in every facet.” During his time at Bishop Hendricken, Shields has served as a Peer Minister, member of the Leadership Academy, and an active presence in Campus Ministry. Following COVID, Shields led the effort to relaunch mission trips that were derailed by the pandemic and traveled on this year’s trip to serve migrant and immigrant communities in Brownsville, Texas. During Catholic Schools Week, Shields penned a reflection on the Hendricken experience and what it means to be Catholic.

This year, Shields was one recipient of the Diocese of Providence’s St. Timothy Award given annually to an outstanding high school student who works zealously to improve their parish, school, and youth ministry programs. He is also an active member of St. Luke’s Parish in Barrington.

In the classroom, Shields ranks in the top 20 of the graduating class while taking a challenging AP and honors course load his entire academic career. A Varsity athlete, he serves as captain of the wrestling and lacrosse teams. He was also a member of the inaugural rowing club.
