School Counselor Job Description and Responsibilities:
Qualifications: A Master’s degree (or current enrollment in a Master’s program) in Educational Counseling or a related field, with experience in K-12 or college counseling.
Accountability: He/she will participate in all guidance related matters and is accountable to the Director of School Counseling and the Assistant Principal
Responsibilities:
1. Individual school counseling services for all students on caseload
2. Consult with administrators, faculty, parents and outside agencies regarding any issue of an assigned students
3. Identify and monitor at-risk students
4. Senior check-ins to make sure they are on track for college applications and deadlines
5. Provide personalized College Planning support to all juniors and seniors on the caseload- including individual family college planning meetings junior year
6. Monitor all student course selection and recommendations for scheduling including reviewing all schedules before they go out to students/families
7. Provide group counseling and workshops including: Common App, Exam Preparation, Naviance, Junior College Planning
8. Participate in the planning and execution of the College Fair
9. Attend and participate in weekly SST meetings and keep track of all missing assignments, incompletes and at-risk student behavior of all students on caseload
10. Review all report cards
11. Write individual letters of recommendation for all seniors on caseload
12. Provide time management, test taking, organization, note taking and other executive functioning strategies to students in need
13. Refer students to Academic Support Services and Mental Health Counseling services as needed
14. Participate in the interpretation of documents pertaining to students including but not limited to IEPs, 504, Family Court documents, School Plans
15. Facilitate conversations between students, parents and teachers
16. Encourage and support students’ self-advocacy
17. Participate in weekend and evening events including: Open House, Parent Conferences, Jr College Planning night, National Honors Society, New Student Orientation, Graduation and Mass of Welcome
18. Proctor standardized tests including PSAT, SAT, AP exams
