Hendricken announces veterans events for November

WARWICK, RI (October 30, 2023) – Bishop Hendricken High School is proud to announce several upcoming events honoring veterans throughout November.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall Dedication (November 1, 2023)

A Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall nameplate dedication will be held on Wednesday, November 1, 2023 at 1pm on campus for Providence native and Vietnam veteran Army Specialist Four David A. Vicario.

Vicario, assigned to C Company, 6th Battalion, 31st Infantry, 9th Infantry Division, arrived in Vietnam in April 1968. Soldiers from the 6/31 infantry assisted in the recapture of Saigon’s suburbs and conducted operations in the Mekong Delta and Plain of Reeds near Cambodia. Vicario was wounded on December 21, 1968; was then subsequently returned to the United States and medically discharged from the Army. On November 17, 1996, he died from the injuries received in Vietnam. Vicario’s name was added to the Vietnam Veterans War Memorial in May 1999 and will now be added to Bishop Hendricken’s dedication wall for Rhode Island veterans serving in Vietnam.

Justice Francis X. Flaherty ’64, a retired captain in the U.S Army and Chairman of the Board of Advisors will be the keynote speaker. Fr. Robert L. Marciano, KHS ’75, President, will offer greetings and closing remarks, Fr. Brian Morris ’03 will lead the opening prayer, and retired Lieutenant Colonel Joe Cichon will provide opening remarks. Cichon is also the retired Social Studies Department Chair at Bishop Hendricken.

Veterans Day Breakfast (November 11, 2023)

On Veterans Day, Bishop Hendricken and Iggy’s Boardwalk will once again host their annual Veterans Day Breakfast to honor those who have served. All veterans, retired, and active-duty military and their families will eat for free and may choose between two serving times at Iggy’s Boardwalk in Warwick on Saturday, November 11, 2023: 8:30am or 9:30am.

“We are pleased to once again partner with our neighbors at Iggy’s to offer a small token of our community’s gratitude and appreciation for our veterans,” said Fr. Robert L. Marciano, KHS ’75, President. “May God continue to bless America and all those who have served.”

Fr. Marciano will be joined by local officials and leaders for the breakfast, including Senator Jack Reed, Warwick Mayor Frank Picozzi, and Rhode Island Public Transportation Authority CEO Scott Avedisian.

Veterans Day Prayer Service (November 15, 2023)

On Wednesday, November 15, 2023, Fr. Marciano will host a prayer service in honor of Veterans Day at 1pm in the War Memorial Prayer Garden on campus. Joining Fr. Marciano at the ceremony with remarks will be Brig. Gen. Thomas Hannon, a 36-year, full time member of the Air National Guard and Chief of Staff for RI National Guard.

Gen. Hannon also worked for 23 years on the Warwick Police Department, retiring in the rank of captain and Officer in Command of the Detective Division.
