WARWICK, RI (May 21, 2019) – Bishop Hendricken High School will add six accomplished alumni to its illustrious Athletic Hall of Fame at an induction ceremony on Monday, June 24th at Warwick Country Club. Proceeds from the 4th Annual Hall of Fame Alumni Golf Classic will benefit the Alumni Scholarship Fund, which provides financial support to students who may not be able to return to Hendricken otherwise.

Honorees include one of the greatest lacrosse players in the history of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League, Colin Briggs ’07, who was a three-time All-State selection and a three-time high school All-American. Briggs continued his distinguished lacrosse career at the University of Virginia and later in professional lacrosse.

High School All-American, Darren Rojas ’79, dominated the regional cross country scene in 1978 and led Hendricken to Rhode Island and New England championships. He was the individual champion of the Rhode Island Injury Fund, Kent County Championship, Class A Championship, Rhode Island State Championship and the New England Championship where he set a course record.

Chosen as Hendricken’s Outstanding Senior Athlete, Steve Cirella ’74, was a standout in both football and baseball. Steve joined the Hendricken faculty after college and coached several sports at his alma mater. Later he served as athletic director at Coventry High School and coached baseball at Salve Regina University.

One of the most outstanding swimmers in Hendricken’s history, Christopher Holt ’90, was the RI Interscholastic League Swim Coaches Association Swimmer of the Year in 1990, and a multi-time All-State selection.  The RI Swimmer of the Year for 1987 and 1990 held RI Interscholastic League records in the 200 and 500-yard freestyle for more than 10 years.

Captain and All-State football and track star, Neil Koenig ’96, led Hendricken to Super Bowl championships in 1994 and 1995 and earned back-to-back first place honors in the javelin in the RI State Championships in 1995 and 1996.  Neil also finished 2nd in the New England Invitational his senior year.

Clifton Lawrence ’96, an All-State running back and member of the 1994 and 1995 championship football teams, was also an All-State sprinter in track and attended Fordham University on a football scholarship.

“As always, this year’s impressive group of inductees has represented Bishop Hendricken High School with excellence both on and off the playing field and deserve to be honored for their many athletic achievements with an induction into our illustrious Athletic Hall of Fame. We could not be more excited to honor these worthy Hawks,” said Hendricken President Father Robert L. Marciano, KHS ‘75.

For the fourth year in a row Hendricken is combining its annual alumni golf tournament with the Athletic Hall of Fame in a special event including lunch, golf at Warwick Country Club, prizes, cocktails and the awards dinner.

Tickets to the full event are $250 (golf and awards dinner) or $100 (awards dinner only). Tickets can be purchased by calling Heather Picillo at 401-739-3450, ext. 130.
