Cross Country captures Eastern States Championship at Manhattan Invitational

Bishop Hendricken reigns as Eastern States Champions over steep national competition

NEW YORK, NY (October 13, 2018) – Bishop Hendricken Cross Country stunned national competition at the 2018 Manhattan College Cross Country Invitational in New York by capturing the Boys Eastern States Championship with a tally of 92 points. Aidan Tierney ’19 (12:35.8) led the Hawks’ charge by finishing 7th overall with the 2nd fastest time in school history.

In the Eastern States Championship race, the Hawks set a new school record with a team average of 12:47.22. Matt St. Jean ’20 (18th, 12:48.1) set a meet record for the fastest time ever run by a high school junior. Jack McMahon ’19 (13th, 12:46.0), Luke Henseler ’20 (22nd, 12:49.6), and David DelBonis ’20 (32nd, 12:56.6) rounded out Hendricken’s high finishers.

“This race included national caliber teams like Fayetteville-Manlius (#2-NY), Christian Brothers Academy (#6-NJ), Claremont (#16-CA), La Salle (#14), and The Bolles School (#9-FL),” wrote Assistant Coach Daniel Brennan ’00. “This is a huge victory for us. It solidifies our program, and our state, as a national contender in cross country.”

In the Junior Varsity B race, Dylan Manning ’19 (1st, 13:25.0) led the Hawks to a team win with his individual victory. Andrew Woodbine ’20 (3rd, 13:40.9), James Kiernan ’20 (10th, 13:47.2), Ian Hopkins ’20 (14th, 14:00.0), and Ryan Mallozzi ’19 (20th, 14:10.0) rounded out the Hawks’ top 20 finishers.

In the Sophomore C race, Evan Reynolds ’21 (1st, 13:30.0) captured his own victory, helping Bishop Hendricken to a 3rd place team finish.

Currently, Bishop Hendricken Cross Country is ranked #12 in the nation, per DyeStat. Twenty-three time state titleholders and reigning RI State Champions, the Hawks went undefeated in their 2018 regular season with a 10-0 record. The team’s next action is the RIIL Class A Championship on Saturday, October 27 at Ponaganset High School.
