WARWICK, RI (April 23, 2025) – Mark R. DeCiccio ’03, Principal, is proud to announce that Ethan Charnley ’25 has been named Bishop Hendricken High School’s 2025 Man of the Year. The honor was announced at a schoolwide prayer service before the 51st Annual Hunger Walk.
The Bishop Hendricken Man of the Year award is the highest honor bestowed on a student. Man of the Year is presented annually to a graduating senior who truly exemplifies the ideals of a Hendricken man: academic success commensurate with his ability, positive attitude toward the Hendricken code of conduct, dedication to service, involvement in the extracurricular life of the school, and strong relationships with those in the school and local communities. The award has been given each year since Bishop Hendricken’s first graduating class in 1962. The Man of the Year is chosen by the graduating class and faculty.
“Ethan is a humble, steadfast leader,” said DeCiccio. “He is an excellent student-athlete with a passion for service, raising over $3,000 to help our custodian with medical expenses. He shows up, works hard, and puts others first. He stays grounded in his faith, lets it guide everything he does, and lives out what it means to lead by example.”
An ambitious student-athlete, Charnley has earned admission to Coastal Carolina University and University of Rhode Island. A career member of the Principal’s List at Bishop Hendricken, he is ranked 41st in the Class of 2025 with a 3.51 GPA in a course load including several Advanced Placement (AP) and honors classes. Charnley has been inducted into the National Honor Society and National English Honor Society.
A force for building community, Charnley has taken charge of student-led Campus Ministry initiatives. This fall, he reinstated Mission Wednesday, a Hendricken tradition where our school community raises funds for various charities and gives back to the local community. This year, he’s helped raise over $7,000 for local charities, including the Rhode Island Blood Center, Sojourner House, and Gloria Gemma Foundation. As a junior, he worked with administration to reschedule the 50th Annual Hunger Walk three times after the event was cancelled due to inclement weather twice. Charnley is part of the Hawks Morning Broadcast, serving as executive producer, anchor, and sports reporter. He has been a member of the Fishing Club, Peer Mentors, and Peer Ministry. A strong advocate for servant leadership, he led the Mission Peru supplies drive and participated in the Lima, Peru mission trip in 2025.
A 4-year member of our Varsity Football team, Charnley was named captain for the 2024 Fall season. He has earned All-State, All-Division, and All-Academic honors, alongside a Golden Dozen nomination and a Student-Athlete of the Year nomination from the Rhode Island Interscholastic League. Charnley is also a 4-year member of our Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field teams, where he earned an All-Division honor and placed second overall in the weight throw at the New England Championships his junior year. Outside of Hendricken, Charnley volunteers as a youth football coach for the West Warwick Steelers and a referee for the NFL Play 60 flag football league in Cranston.
Charnley came to Bishop Hendricken as a freshman after attending St. Joseph School in West Warwick. He plans to double major in finance and accounting at the University of Rhode Island.
As Man of the Year, Charnley will speak at Academic Honors Convocation on Monday, May 19, 2025 and Senior Breakfast on Sunday, June 8, 2025.
