Emmitt Rattey ’25 earns Principal’s Leadership Award

WARWICK, RI (April 23, 2025) – Mark R. DeCiccio ’03, Principal, is proud to announce that Emmitt Rattey ’25 has been named recipient of the 2025 Principal’s Leadership Award. The honor was announced at a schoolwide prayer service before the 51st Annual Hunger Walk.

Inspired by Bishop Hendricken’s core values, the Principal’s Leadership Award is presented to a graduating senior who is dedicated to servant leadership throughout his career at Hendricken. The recipient is an individual who lives out Christ’s message, and the mission of the Church, by doing for others. More specifically, this includes service to the poor, marginalized, voiceless, and those facing injustice.

“Emmitt is grounded in always doing what is right,” said DeCiccio. “Whether it’s helping someone who’s struggling, standing up for those who don’t have a voice, or just showing kindness when it’s needed most, he leads by serving. Through everything he’s done at Hendricken, he’s been a quiet, authentic force for good, always putting others first and making a real difference in our community. He is a true Hawk!”

An extraordinary student, Rattey has received full tuition scholarships to the University of Rhode Island and Babson College, while also earning admission to Brown University, Northeastern University, and Boston College, among others. Rattey is a career member of the Principal’s List and currently ranked 3rd in the Class of 2025 with a 4.0 GPA in a full Advanced Placement (AP) and honors course load, including an online college-level math course in partnership with Creighton University. An AP Scholar with Honor and National Merit Commended Scholar, Rattey is a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society, National English Honor Society, and National Spanish Honor Society. As a junior, he earned both the University of Rochester Frederick Douglass & Susan B. Anthony and Blessed Edmund Rice Book Awards.

An involved member of our Leadership Academy, Rattey has spearheaded various school initiatives and events. A staple in our cafeteria, he has helped to grow the Leadership Academy snack bar, a lunchtime nonprofit that has generated over $30,000 in revenue which has been donated to various charities and school events including the Gloria Gemma Foundation, KyleCares Foundation, and Project Playhouse. This past winter, Rattey led efforts for our annual Christmas toy drive, which garnered 475 toys and a $2,000 donation to Oakland Beach Elementary.

Over the course of his time at Bishop Hendricken, Rattey has served as a peer mentor for the Option Program, hosted campus tours as vice president of the Ambassadors Club, and served as part of the state action team and chapter vice president of our DECA Club. As part of our DECA Club, he is a 3-time state champion, a 2-time qualifier for the international competition (ICDC), and a DECA Finance Cluster Exam State Top Scorer.

Outside of the classroom, Rattey is a 4-year runner for Varsity Cross Country, Indoor Track and Field, and Outdoor Track and Field, serving as captain for all 3. He has earned All-Class, All-Division, and All-Academic honors, alongside the RITCA Cross Country Coaches award and being a New England Championships Individual Qualifier. Outside of Hendricken, Rattey volunteers as an academic and SAT tutor through the Schoolhouse Online Learning Program, through which he has taught 124 students from 32 countries.

Rattey came to Bishop Hendricken as a freshman after attending Winman Middle School in Warwick. He has yet to decide where he will attend this fall, but would like to major in economics or finance and double major in business analytics or applied mathematics.

As Principal’s Leadership Award recipient, Rattey will speak at the Honor Societies Induction Ceremony on Wednesday, April 30, 2025.
