WARWICK, RI (June 4, 2021) – Fr. Robert L. Marciano, KHS ’75, President, and Fr. Brian Morris ’03, Chaplain, are pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Mark McPhillips ’08 as Bishop Hendricken High School’s Director of Campus Ministry. McPhillips takes over following the long and storied legacy of Mr. Thomas Gambardella ’76, former Director of Campus Ministry. McPhillips will begin on July 1, 2021.

In this role, McPhillips will be responsible for developing and implementing programs and activities that promote the Roman Catholic character of Bishop Hendricken, including school Masses, Peer Ministry, retreats, community service opportunities, prayer services, and pastoral support for students, faculty, and staff.

“I’m very excited to have Mark added to our Campus Ministry team,” said Fr. Morris. “As a fellow Hawk, he knows our Christ-centered culture, and in turn, how to be a positive Catholic role model and resource for our students, faculty, and staff. I look forward to working with him in forming Hendricken men who will bring God’s love and mercy out into the world.”

After graduating from Bishop Hendricken in 2008, McPhillips attended the University of Rhode Island where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in History. For the past decade, he has been educating students at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Out of college, McPhillips began working as a substitute teacher, athletic director, and summer camp director at Immaculate Conception Catholic Regional School in Cranston. Currently, he is a teacher’s certificate program candidate in the Providence College School of Continuing Education.

“I am extremely honored and excited to step into the role of Director of Campus Ministry,” McPhillips said. “Tom Gambardella was a huge influence on me as a teacher, and more importantly, as a mentor. The best way I could honor him is to serve dutifully in this role each day, share our faith, and help to bring our community closer to God.”

McPhillips has been actively involved in an array of experiences here at Bishop Hendricken. As a student, he was a member of the 2008 mission trip to Lima, Peru; section leader of the drumline; member of the concert and jazz bands; manager of the Varsity Baseball team; and an Eagle Scout. As an alumnus, McPhillips helped lead Bishop Hendricken mission trips to Florida, Kenya, and Tanzania. Since 2009, he has also worked as a drumline and percussion instructor for the Arts at Bishop Hendricken.

Additionally, McPhillips has mentored by serving as an assistant basketball coach for Exeter-West Greenwich High School, as well as drumline instructor at Westerly High School. McPhillips lives in Hope and is a parishioner of Immaculate Conception Church in Cranston.
